Sun Fading: How to Ensure your Rugs Future is Bright

December 12, 2015

Pen Buying GuideWhen you’re laying out for a suntan, you can’t expose just one side without flipping over, right? That’s not a great look for anyone. Well, it’s also not a great look for a rug or carpet either.

Case in point: We recently picked up a carpet for cleaning at a customer’s home, noticing that the right side of the carpet had a different shade than the rest of the carpet. Why? We quickly realized the uneven tone was due to the fact that the customer had a sofa located on the right side of the carpet – so while the rest of the carpet had repeated sun exposure, the covered area had none. When you don’t turn a rug by re-positioning it regularly, the rug or carpet experiences sun fading.

Just like humans who can’t be exposed to the sun’s powerful rays for a long time without moving to prevent damage, your rug can’t “stare” into the sun for prolonged periods of time without damage. One side looks good as new while the other looks like it’s aged – this often creates a situation where you find yourself needing to always cover up that area of the carpet because, after all, how bad would it look to have only one part of the carpet look high quality?

Sun fading isn’t always the easiest symptom to spot either because lighting can be unique in that room. Under a different set of lights it can be quite revealing. In this example, the customer saw only an issue with soiling as a result of heavy foot traffic. Once they brought it into HC Nahigian & Sons, however, we could see the carpet had encountered sun fading as well.

So in addition to turning your rug and carpet, make sure you schedule a cleaning with HC Nahigian on a frequent basis too. We can spot the signs of sun fading if you haven’t already, which when combined with our rug and carpet cleaning services can have your fabric looking its best a whole lot longer. We can pick up your rug or carpet Monday through Friday – or get a 20% discount when you drop it off and pick up from our location in Skokie. To schedule your rug and carpet cleaning with HC Nahigian & Sons, call 847.676.2500 today.
