WHAT’S FOR LUNCH? YOUR RUG!

December 22, 2014

moth damage on a rugIf you see a more whitish area of your rug that's grown much larger, that area encompasses the larvae of a moth. Tiny grains within this area represent moth eggs – eggs that can cling to the back of the rug.

It’s not the most attractive thing to describe, we know. But it’s easy to mistake this discoloration for something minor when it’s anything but.

The fact is, it’s only a matter of time moths can invade your home too easily and when they do, wool moth larvae can lay thousands of eggs and build hundreds of nests. That’s when you eventually spot signs of moths chowing down on your rugs, like the kind of discoloration we're describing above.

So if moths are more than likely going to get in the door, how do you protect your rug against them when they do?

Mothproofing from HC Nahigian and Sons

There are a variety of ways HC Nahigian can tell moths to take a hike while repair and restoring your rug. One of those ways is mothproofing.

After a rug has been cleaned (which we recommend doing every 3-5 years if the rug is experiencing normal foot traffic), we begin the mothproofing process in which a treatment is applied to the rug. Rather than a harmful pesticide that might damage the rug, this treatment acts as a “flavoring” of sorts for the wool that the moth larvae don’t like eating.

Mothproofing should only be done when there are signs of a problem.

Another recommended step for extra protection is wrapping any rug that’s not in use in tyvek paper, which we can also handle for you. Upon sealing the rug to prevent anything from getting into the package, we can even store the rug at our Skokie location for up to a year.

If a rug that’s a constant fixture in your home has already had a close encounter with some little winged friends who had it for lunch, chances are we can come to the rescue. HC Nahigian’s rug repair department is one of the best in the business, bringing back rugs that have experienced all kinds of damage. The moths may have won one battle but we know how to win the war for your cherished investment – give HC Nahigian a call to learn how at 847.676.2500 today.
