WHY HARDER WORKING SHEEP PRODUCE LONGER LASTING RUGS

July 15, 2014

Not all grades of wool are created equal. The wool from Nepal and Tibet has a high lanolin content, which is why the rugs we receive from these regions wear so well. Persian rugs are also known to last a long time as well for the great quality of wool.

American sheep, on the other hand, usually don’t make for good Oriental rugs – and not just because they’re obviously from a different part of the world. Believe it or not, it’s because they’re actually too well taken care of.

That’s right. When sheep don’t need to fight to get the grass they need to eat, their wool doesn’t have the long staple feature that is necessary in creating the fiber for a good wearing rug.

Contrast this with Persian wool that comes from sheep that graze in the Zagros Mountains (the largest mountain range in Iran) in the summer. Generally speaking, when these sheep work harder to get the grass they need in feeding, it creates a positive effect on the growth of their wool coat.

With a new rug purchased from HC Nahigian, you can feel better about investing in a wool product that doesn’t feature shorter fibered wools that are drier and tend to break off (resulting in endless shedding). So when you buy one of our longer lasting rugs from Nepal, Tibet and other regions, remember to thank the sheep for working overtime during feeding time.

High quality may start with the sheep but continues in the showroom. Especially when you’re accompanied by the most highly experienced team in the business to guide you to the right rug for your tastes and budget.

So stop by HC Nahigian’s Skokie location on 5140 Golf Road and we’ll be glad to take care of you. And if you want to make sure we carry a certain style you already have in mind or explain the size of space you’re dealing with, we can chat about that with you too to ensure your time in our showroom is very well spent – call us at 847.676.2500 or email info@nahigian.com.
